“I’ll have to check my work schedule.”

It is already 10:00 p.m. She must already know her schedule for tomorrow.

That was the most idiotic excuse I could have come up with. But I was freaking out too much to think of anything more clever. I really did want to go, but I was still not sure of his intentions. And a one-time thing was not necessarily bad, but I knew myself. I was going to get attached and end up heartbroken. I didn’t want to go through that. I was better than that. Deserved better than that. He replied to that with “of course,” and I stopped texting him after that. I spent the rest of the night, as well as my shift, mulling this over in my head. The few times at work that Eric would slip my mind, one of the girls would question me about the “hot guy” and bring it all right back. I avoided the questions as best I could, but I soon reached a breaking point. I was going to go insane.

“I need to leave a little early,” I finally told Rebecca and Aimee, who were working with me. “Can you cover for me?”

“Sure,” Aimee said. “Everything okay?”

“Yes. I just need to catch a bus that leaves about 15 minutes before the end of shift.”

“Okay. Where are you going?”

“Craven Edge,” I said confidently, although I didn’t really feel all that confident at all.
